In today’s reading, Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem for the last week of His life. He gathers His disciples together and tells them for the third time that He will be betrayed, condemned, handed over to the gentiles to be tortured and killed AND on the third will rise again.
The disciples don’t seem to get it. John and James asks Jesus to do whatever they want. Jesus answers, “What do you want me to do for you?” They want Jesus to place them on His left and right hand side when He comes into His glory.
Jesus says that those places are reserved for the ones God has appointed. He then goes on to describe for them and for us, what it takes for us to live complete and fulfilled lives whether we get to sit at His left or right or not.
