Luke 13:10-17

In Luke chapter four, Jesus preached His first sermon in the synagogue (that’s recorded in Luke).  Jesus quotes from Isaiah 61:1-2 about how God will set the captives free and the good news will be preached to the poor.  Then Jesus claimed that He is the fulfillment of that prophecy.

Our reading for today gives us a picture of what that looks like.  A woman who had been stopped over for eighteen years comes to the synagogue where Jesus is teaching. Jesus heals her and is berated by the synagogue leader who accused Jesus of violating sabbath rules.

He could not get past the rules to witness the inbreaking of God’s gracious Kingdom. God’s gracious Kingdom is still breaking into our world and lives every minute. Jesus is still in the healing business. Join us today as Jesus invites us to stand up straight.
